Rockshox Serial Number Year

RockShox have just posted a Consumer Alert warning about the potential hazards of purchasing suspension forks with scratched off serial numbers.

The number is the year of manufacture and the letter appears to be the month of manufacture. In the example, the 'F' indicates the sixth month, or June. Steve Mann reports a mid 70s SR seatpost which is marked with a date code of the form 76.9, where 76 is the year and 9 is either a fractional year or the ninth month of the year. The serial number can be found engraved on the back side of the fork's crown and on a barcode sticker attached to the fork's lower leg. 'RockShox' and the model name are written on the bicycle forks. These forks were sold as original equipment on numerous brands and models of bicycles. . The serial number is laser etched on the back of the crown. For RS1 and carbon fiber steerer tubes, there is a decal on the back side of the steerer tube.

Said forks will not be covered by any warranty. They may even be counterfeit products or even ‘Frankenstein’ forks made up of bits of several separate forks.

RockShox Authentication Notice

SRAM has seen a considerable increase in RockShox branded suspension forks sold online with the product serial number scratched off of the fork crown.

Forks with scratched off serial numbers could be potentially dangerous to use and are not covered by the SRAM Warranty. Do not ride forks that have the product serial number scratched off.

RockShox forks with scratched off serial numbers are typically purchased from an unauthorized online retailer who is shipping directly from a factory. Without an identifiable product serial number, it is impossible to distinguish a genuine RockShox fork from a counterfeit reproduction. The counterfeit fork may look like a genuine RockShox product.

Genuine RockShox forks have a unique serial number that is laser engraved on the backside of the fork crown. Each fork and corresponding serial number is cataloged as a part of SRAM’s manufacturing process. The only way to guarantee you are purchasing a genuine RockShox fork is to purchase it from an authorized dealer. Only a genuine RockShox fork has the quality, service, performance, and warranty backed by SRAM.

We value and appreciate your interest in purchasing genuine RockShox products. Please visit your local authorized RockShox dealer for assistance in choosing the right RockShox fork for you or visit us online at www.rockshox.com

Are all RockShox forks affected?
No, only the 2001 model year of Judy TT, Judy TT Special, Jett, Metro XC and Metro SL forks are affected.
What should I do if I have one of these forks on my bike?
Stop riding it immediately and return the bike to us or your nearest RockShox dealer. Your safety is our largest concern, and your cooperation will ensure that you are not injured while using the product. There is no charge for the retrofit kit.
If I haven't noticed any problems with my fork, do I still have to bring it in?
Yes. The problem cannot be seen externally. Please bring your bicycle to us or your nearest dealer to have it inspected and retrofitted.
What exactly is the problem?
There is a plastic rod inside each fork leg that helps guide the upper part of the fork as it is compressed. Under some circumstances, these rods can fracture. If both rods were to fracture at the same time, the fork can separate, causing the rider to lose control. (See photo below)
